Among the films nominated this season it’s hard to ignore the television shows which have fought their way through the ranks. It seems a new trend in this year’s award season are the Newcomers, bringing fresh and innovative ideas to the small screen. The 2015 Golden Globes once again predicts the future winners.
Showtime’s The Affair took home the best television series at the Golden Globes on January 11, 2015. The TV show explores the emotional effects of an extramarital relationship between Noah Solloway and Alison Bailey after the two meet in the resort town of Montauk on Long Island. The series which premiered last October, seems to have gained audiences approval because of its unique timeline, which gathers perspective both from Noah and Alison’s point of views. Unlike most TV shows the Affair seems to tell stories like a chronicled book rather than an episodic TV show, and that’s what sets it apart from the competition, which included longtime runners like HBO’s Game of Thrones, the PBS’ Downton Abbey, and fellow newcomers like Netflix’s House of Cards and CBS’ The Good Wife.

In best comedy or musical another newcomer, Amazon’s Transparent took the Golden Globe. Amazon is fairly new to making television shows, in fact Amazon Studios was founded back in 2010 and as such Transparent taking the award came as a shock to fans of other TV shows nominated, which included HBO’s Girls and Silicon Valley, Netflix’s Orange is the New Black, and lastly CW’s newest show Jane the Virgin. All of the TV Shows nominated are fairly new, most of which premiered in the last 5 years. What sets Transparent apart is its subject matter, a family dealing with the aftermath of discovering that their dad is transgender, hence the name. The series stars long famous veteran actor Jeffrey Tambor, best known for his role in the show Arrested Development.
Ultimately it seems there is a strong demand for unique and complex story telling in television, and there are now many different venues to showcase that material. It is more apparent than ever that fresh stories dealing with heavier subject matter too risky for network television will ultimately rise to the top in the coming years. The competition for these will continue to be the producing frontrunner’s HBO, Showtime and Netflix, which have set the pace and never fail to prove their worth. It’s an exciting time in this Golden Age of Television.
